… Lekki LCDA Showcases Tourism Potentials To The World

A 17-year-old Francis James, from Plateau State, has won the second edition of the Mangrove Marathon Race 2023 held on Saturday in Lekki Local Council Development Area, Lagos.

James won one million naira in the 10km eco-friendly race to beat other contestants including a former presidential candidate in the 2023 General Elections and Publisher of Sahara Reporters, Mr Omowole Sowore.

James who expressed delight in coming out first among the males that took part in the competition said it took him six months to prepare for the race. He urged his fellow contestants to work harder next time if they must win the race.

A staff of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), David Abiye-Joyce, came first among the females in the competition. She expressed gratitude to God for making it possible for her to win the women category. Nothing She said that she had been winning athletic competitions for the NSCDC.

Earlier in his Welcome address, the Lekki LCDA Chairman. Hon. Rasak Kasali, expressed gratitude to organizers and participants of the Mangrove Marathon Race for identifying with the LCDA.

Kasali said that there was no denying the fact that mangroves were extremely important to the ecosystem. “We are in partnership with Mangrove Marathon because the event is timely and beneficial to our people and the development of our LCDA”.

According to the host Chairman, mangroves serve as a buffer between marine and terrestrial communities and protect shorelines from damaging winds, waves, and floods.

Kasali said mangrove thickets improve water quality by filtering pollutants and trapping sediments from the land.

He, however, said that in spite of the wide ranging benefits, they were being destroyed. Kasali added that mangroves suffer from land based pollution.

The chairman noted that the benefits of mangroves were fast being eroded. “We as a government have continued to play our part and I call on captains of industries working within the Lekki LCDA to be environmentally responsive.

“I equally extend invitations to tourism enthusiasts to think Lekki LCDA and think investment in tourism. What we are witnessing today is simply ecotourism”, Kasali said.

Mrs. Tolulope Adeyo, Director, Ecology & Conservation, Ministry of Environment & Water Resources, said mangroves were very important to the Lagos State Government.

Adeyo said that Lekki has the longest stretch of mangroves in the state. According to her, mangroves are assets to the community serving as protection for fauna and floral in the ecosystem.

The Director-General, Nigeria Conservation Foundation (NCF), in his remarks said Nigeria has the largest mangroves in Africa. He noted that Nigeria has one-third of the entire mangrove in Africa and the third most extensive mangrove ecosystems in the world after India and Indonesia.

The Convener of the Mangrove Marathon Race, Mr Jerry Chidi, described the race was a huge success. Chidi said the youth of Lekki LCDA were excited to take part in the race, not just for fun, but to create awareness for the conservation of mangrove.

According to him, the Local Organizing Committee of the Marathon Race plans to make it bigger in the coming years; 21km in 2024 and 42 Km in 2025.

The traditional ruler of Ise Land, Oba Ganiu Adebowale Adegbesan (Onise of Ise Land), pledged the support of the palace in the preservation and restoration of mangroves.

Highlights of the event were the presentation of prizes to various categories of contesters, planting of mangroves at the Ecopark Mangrove Sanctuary and Research Centre, Akodo Ise, by the dignitaries and a cultural display by Imale Owoyele from Apakin community in Lekki LCDA.

The Mangrove Marathon Lagos 2023 which held on July 29, was aimed at commemorating the international day for the conservation of the mangrove.

The partnership according to Damilare Shoye, the president of LALOTO and Head of Tourism Unit in Lekki Local Council Development Area, is to further the promotion of Lagos State tourism potentials as enshrined in Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu’s THEMES-Plus agenda.

LALOTO tour of Lagos with Lagferry was a 360 degree sight seeing tour of Lagos waterways from Five Cowries Terminal to Lekki/Ikoyi Link Bridge, Third Mainland (Babangida) Bridge, Second Mainland (Eko) Bridge and, First Mainland (Carter) Bridge. LALOTO Tourists also sighted the Intermodal Transport System Terminal (Ferry, Road and Rail) at CMS, Tarkwa Bay Beach and witnessed the exit of a Brasilian cargo ship from Lagos into the sea.

BREAKING: Nigeria In Darkness As National Grid Collapsed Second Time In 2022

The Nigeria’s electrixity transmission system also known as the national grid on Monday suffered its second collapse in 2022, plunging the entire country into a blackout.

Confirming the development in a text message to its customers, The Eko Electricity Distribution Company, said that the system collapse occurred on the national grid at 10:40 am.

The message read; “Dear esteemed customer, a system collapse occurred on the national grid at 10:40 am today, leading to outages across our network.
“We are working on the situation with our TCN partners and will keep you updated. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused.” the text message read.

Kaduna Electricity also confirmed the system collapse but assured its customers that power would soon be restored.

“We regret to inform you that the power outage being experienced in our franchise states is due to System Collapse of the National Grid which occurred at about 10:40 am,” the firm said, tendering apologies for any inconvenience.”

In its notice to customers, the Enugu Electricity Distribution PLC said that the system collapse affected supply in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States.

The notice signed by EEDC Head, Corporate Communications, Emeka Ezeh, read, “The Enugu Electricity Distribution PLC (EEDC) wishes to inform her esteemed customers in the South East of a general system collapse which occurred this morning, Monday, 14th March 2022 at 10:40 am.

“This is the reason for the loss of supply currently being experienced across the network.
“Consequently, all our outgoing feeders are out and supply to our customers in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States are affected by this development.”

2023 Presidency; I Have Informed Buhari of My Ambition – Tinubu

The former Governor of Lagos State and national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday said he has informed President Muhammadu Buhari of his ambition to contest for the position of president in 2023.

Asiwaju Tinubu also revealed, it was a lifelong ambition and that he has the confidence, the vision and the capacity to build on the vision of President Buhari.

The former Senator disclosed this to State House correspondents after meeting behind closed-doors with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He said he was at the State House to see the President on general issues concerning Nigeria including some of the concerns in the APC as well as security issues.

Asked whether he has informed President Buhari of his ambition to contest for the position of the President in 2023, he said, “I have informed the President of my ambition but I have not informed Nigerians yet, I am still consulting.”

On what was the response of President Buhari, Asiwaju Tinubu said that the President as a democrat did not ask him to stop from contesting.

Former Presidents and members of board of trustees, Club ’97 of Epe Division, a forum of the Indigenes of Epe Division in the Local Government Service of Lagos State have commended the group’s current leadership for raising the standard of engagements and agitations for members’ interest.

At the Group’s end of the year get-together held on Sunday December 12, 2021 at Ikeja Local Government Secretariat, the trio of Barr. Afeez Otuniyi (Omo London), Mrs. Toyin Bowale (mama club ’97) and Mr. Abdul-Akeem Adesanya took turn to acknowledge the efforts of the Club’s current executives led by Mr. Ishaq Adeshina Okeowo towards ensuring that the interest of members is well protected at the local government service in particular and Lagos state civil service by extension.

Okeowo equally extended his gratitude to their patrons/matrons, Heads of Departments/Units and other distinguished members who he described as “the pillars upon which the Club’s existence rest.

In a special commendation to the special guest of the occasion, the Hon. Commissioner representing Epe Division in the LGSC, Hon. Ahmed Seriki, the president reeled out various appointments benefited by Club members courtesy of the Commissioner. He thereafter pleaded for members to please pay their monthly and monthly meetings’ sponsorship dues, the main source of generating funds for group’s activities.
